If You Are A Guy And You Wear A Dress On A Plane The Airlines Can Kick You Off The Flight

Recently airlines have refused to let passengers board or remain on a plane because of what they were wearing. A woman was kicked off of an American Airlines flight because she wore a T-Shirt that included the “F” Word.  Another man wore a T-Shirt that said “Terrists gonna kill us” and he was booted off his flight.

So the question becomes what rights do passengers have which allows them to wear what they would like to wear when they travel on commercial flights in the US?

The answer is that the rules are up to each private airline. This means that a private company, like American Airlines can make whatever rules they would like as to the type of clothing that you must wear if you want a seat on one of their flights. They are not bound by the same rules as a governmental agency.

However, there are limits. Of course a private airline cannot refuse to allow you to fly if you wear a turban or if you wear other religious garb. On the other hand if your choice of clothing is particularly disturbing to other passengers the airline is within their legal right to have you change your clothing or exit their aircraft.

Last year it was reported that a passenger was removed from a US Airways flight for refusing to lift up his very low hanging pants. After he was removed he was then arrested. Luckily the DA didn’t file charges. In this case, I assume many of the passengers were not overjoyed about having to look at the bare backside of the passenger.

There is one bright spot for those persons who like to wear what they want to wear on a flight. If you are booted off the flight the airlines say they will refund your fare.
